Matt has over 17 years of experience dedicated exclusively to estate planning and trust administration. He founded Shafae Law to provide tailored legal services delivered with integrity, practicality, and personal care. His calm, solutions-focused approach supports clients through life’s most sensitive legal moments with compassion and clarity, no matter the size of the estate or complexity of the family dynamics.

From 2013 - 2018, Matt received the "Rising Star" designation from Super Lawyers and for two consecutive years, in 2024 and 2025, Matt was selected as a Super Lawyer. In his early legal career, Matt served in the chambers of one of his respected mentors, Hon. Martin J. Jenkins,  justice of the California Supreme Court. He was also awarded the Wiley M. Manuel Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services, reflecting his enduring commitment to public service. In alignment with his values, Matt has mentored at-risk youth in East Palo Alto through the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula and taught high school in the Sequoia Union High School District—experiences that continue to shape his people-first philosophy.

A life-long Bay Area resident, Matt grew up in Belmont and graduated from Carlmont High School. After earning his bachelor’s degree at UCLA, he returned to the Bay Area to earn both his J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from Golden Gate University School of Law. He now lives in San Francisco with his wife, Mercedes. When he’s not practicing law, you’ll find Matt outdoors, exploring the Bay Area, or performing as an amateur musician.
